8 Jali
Chikan work made in India, so called because it looks like a " jal " or a fishing net. It is mostly based on drawn thread work and commonly includes the following varieties: - (1) Jali - In this a fine reticulated effect is produced by taking up a few threads of the warp and weft on to the needle and drawing them together with a thread on the needle. It is done within the outlines of a design and is carried up one way and down another, the result being a number of small holes separated by minute button-holing. No threads are drawn out from the fabric, only very fine cotton thread is used on the needle and the work is done from the wrong side of the cloth. (2) Bilati Jali - In which the actual process is the same as in Jali, except that some threads of the fabric are drawn out before sewing begins and thicker thread is used in the needle, the result being that the holes in the pattern produced are squarer and larger than in Jali. (3) Chatai Jali - In which the holes are made as in Bilati Jali, but an alternating band of fabric is left between each two parallel bands of openings. (4) Mandraji, or Madras Jali - In which, Croceeding as above, the band of fabric between the large openings is further broken up into minute Jali openings, the large openings themselves being usually round. (5) Shiri - Which is simply a single line of Kholas and corresponds to the French Jour Echelle. (6) Kholas - In which five or six threads are drawn out right across the fabric, three or four then left, five or six again drawn out, and so on, in as many lines as may be desired, the work then proceeds as in Bilati Jali. All the various kinds of Kholas are done mainly on the borders of handkerchiefs. (7) Basket - Which is a species of Kholas in which a differently shaped pattern is placed between two lines of Shirli. According to the intervening pattern this work is known as Kholas basket, Chand basket, or Gajar basket. (8) Renda, or Jingir - These are further similar varieties of Kholas. -

11 Muri
Raised needlework in Chikans, and includes native work in many parts of India in which the material itself is covered with stitches to produce a raised effect. The predominating motive in Chikan designs is floral, though butterflies, baskets and birds are also depicted. Whatever the design or pattern, it is first outlined in Muri. The material within these outlines may then be embellished with Jali or Katau, or may be worked over -with Muri without any drawing-out of threads or cutting away of fabric. Muri is done from the right side of the cloth and may be worked either with one or more threads of ordinary cotton according to the nature of the embroidery required, or with thick mercerised cotton thread, the needle being moved backwards and forwards until the vacant space has been covered with the desired thickness of embroidery. Muri work is also used in floral patterns to outline stalks in stem stitch and to represent leaves by patches of embroidery. Arekhal and Patar are varieties of Muri, differing only in thickness of the embroidery. Dhum and Chumki are varieties of Muri in which a different effect is achieved by making stitches at different angles. Bakhia is a variety of Muri, but is done from the wrong side of the cloth. The threads of the cloth are drawn together as in Jali, and ordinary or mercerised thread is used as in Muri, the result being that instead of small holes the right side of the cloth presents a series of blobs or small compact masses of embroidery. -

19 Braid Lace Work
Narrow laces made on the pillow in braid styles. They all have " runners " or threads that form straight lines along the length with various fancy stitches connecting these together. These braids are used in making guipure lace by connecting them together with brides; also much used as edgings, borders and ornament for dresses, children's garments, underwear, etc. The principal varieties are: - Cloth Braid - Resembles plain weave, has four pairs of straight lines with cross stitches joining them together. Cucumber Braid - Has two borders of four threads each connected with spaced stitches. Shadow Braid - The runners are crossed in diamond mesh. Hole Braid - Plain cloth stitch all through with small holes formed in the centre at intervals. Ladder Braid - There are two pairs of runners on one side, and one pair only on the other. Stitched together in ladder-like bars. Lattice Braid - Runners in five pairs, and stitched to form a lattice effect. Open Braid - Runners in two sets - at the sides, connected with spaced loops giving an open tape. -
20 Nipkow, Paul Gottlieb
[br]b. 22 August 1860 Lauenburg, Pommern (now Lebork, Poland)d. 24 August 1940 Berlin, Germany[br]Polish electrical engineer who invented the Nipkow television scanning disc.[br]In 1884, while still a student engineer, Nipkow patented a mechanical television pick-up device using a disc with a spiral of twenty-four holes rotating at 600 rpm in front of a selenium cell. He also proposed a display on an identical synchronous disc in conjunction with a light-modulator based on the Faraday effect. Unfortunately it was not possible to realize a working system at the time because of the slow response of selenium cells and the lack of suitable electronic-sig-nal amplifiers; he was unable to pay the extension fees and so the patent lapsed. Others took up the idea, however, and in 1907 pictures were sent between London and Paris by wire. Subsequently, the principle was used by Baird, Ives, and Jenkins. For most of his working life after obtaining his doctorate, Nipkow was employed as an engineer by a company that made railway-signalling equipment, but his pioneering invention was finally recognized in 1934 when he was made Honorary President of the newly formed German Television Society.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsPresident, German Television Society 1934.Bibliography1884, German patent no. 30,105 (Nipkow's pioneering method of television image-scanning).Further ReadingR.W.Hubbell, 1946, 4,000 Years of Television, London: G.Harrap \& Co.KF
